As recruitment professionals, we get approached by lawyers who want to progress their career but are limited by opportunities where they currently are.
A common scenario is that there are no progression opportunities until someone else leaves which opens a senior position. So, they start looking elsewhere… The only problem is that they may not be as attractive as they think.
They have a great resume; quality education, exceptional experience and a proven track record. But they may not be as attractive as they think.
We hate seeing this.
Our biggest advice to avoid this situation is to make sure you build your OWN client base, where possible.
- Build a client base who will follow you.
- Build a client base who offer revenue streams.
This situation often goes hand-in-hand with staying at a company too long, with limited client exposure.
Gone are the days of employers valuing loyalty and longevity. It’s what everyone wants, but it’s not always what they are looking for in new hires.
You don’t want to be changing jobs too often either. There is a sweet spot in the middle. The sweet spot demonstrates changing jobs for career progression. It demonstrates that you are driven and happy to seek the outcome you desire.
By working at various companies, you learn different management styles. You learn different ways of how a company operates. You learn valuable skills which can improve procedures and processes at your new employer and subsequently increase your client base.
If you are a third year plus lawyer who has only been with the one, now could be a great time to broaden your experience to prevent being stuck in your career. No one plans to be stuck, but it happens far too often without you even realising that it’s happening.
The team at Blake Oliver Legal are always a phone call away to talk about your next career opportunity.
